County: Denver
The area has been known as Highland since the mid 1850s around the time of
the Pikes Peak Gold Rush! In 1859 the Highland town company formed and had levied an assessment on current residents for the purpose of building a bridge over the Platte River which would connect Highland with Auraria and Denver. Highlands refers to two separate city-center neighborhoods in Denver: Highland and West Highland are both in the area that is referred to as North Denver.
The Highland occasionally encompasses other Northwest Denver neighborhoods such as Jefferson Park, Sunnyside and Berkley. These neighborhoods offer many nostalgic homes from the late 1800s through early 1900s. They are often characterized by high, coved ceilings, wood floors, lath and plaster construction, small bedrooms, minimal closet space and partial dirt cellars. Some homes have been nicely updated with granite counters and stainless appliances but still remain true to their heritage.
Homes in the Highlands remain desirable to young professionals and more seasoned home buyers alike. With a commute to Downtown Denver taking no more than 15 minutes, most homeowners willingly choose "old" over "new" and enjoy living history each day. Take a walk or ride a bike through the neighborhoods. Local ethnic restaurants such as Sabor Latino, Squeaky Bean, and Gaetanos are joined by Indulge French Bistro, DJ’s Berkeley Cafe, Colorado Cafe, and a local deli known as Heidi’s to provide many new adventures for foodies and winos.
West Highland and the Highland neighborhoods (almost all of zip codes 80211 and 80212) currently have an estimated population of about 57,000 people.
Highland is often confused with the suburb of Highlands Ranch, located approximately 20 miles to the south. The similarity in name is merely a coincidence.
